Gerrard receives FIFA praise

Liverpool captain fantastic, Steven Gerrard has been praised for his performances in the World Cup this summer in a FIFA technical report.

Gerrard, who captained England during the tournament and scored their opening goal against the USA, was praised along with Ashley Cole.

In the report Gerrard was described as the most influential player and praised as a “dynamic midfielder with good vision and technique, who linked defence and attack”.

Roy Hodgson praise for Fernando Torres after Spaniard's volley helps Liverpool FC beat West Brom

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson paid tribute to the quality of Fernando Torres after his strike proved to be enough to beat 10-man West Brom - and then voiced his hope Spain would not pick him for their forthcoming internationals.

The Spain striker scored his 50th goal at Anfield in all competitions with a brilliant 65th-minute volley from the edge of the penalty area.

It lit up what was a hard-working but uninspiring performance from the hosts, who recorded their first Barclays Premier League victory under Hodgson.

“It was hard-fought, especially the first half when we weren’t firing on all cylinders and they were playing well and causing us problems,” said the Liverpool manager.

“I thought we got better as the game went on and we got the points thanks to a world-class strike.

Javier Mascherano Will Bring A Great Deal To Barcelona - Real Madrid's Xabi Alonso

Alonso departed from Anfield last summer to become part of the Nuevos Galacticos revolution, and now Mascherano looks likely to be the second high-profile Reds midfielder to head for Spain in the space of two years.

AS reports that Alonso has great respect for the abilities of the tough-tackling defensive midfielder, but also added that he prefers to focus on the development of his own club.

He stated, “He [Mascherano] is certainly a great player. He will bring much to Barcelona. I played with him for three seasons and he is above all very competitive.

“I am sure he will bring a lot, but we do not think about Barcelona, only about us.”
