Roy Hodgson says Liverpool job was 'impossible to turn down'

The new our manager Roy Hongson has described his appointment as an opportunity that was "absolutely impossible to turn down". Hodgson was Liverpool's first choice to replace Rafael Benítez after two and a half impressive seasons at Fulham, which culminated in them reaching last season's Europa League final.


Hodgson admitted it had been difficult to leave Fulham, where he had built up a bank of goodwill, but believes taking on the Anfield job will be a highlight of his long and varied managerial career that has included stints in charge of Internazionale, Blackburn Rovers and the Switzerland and Finland national teams.HIs appointment, on a 3 year contract, has already received the baking of the captain Steven Gerrard, and Hodgson is keen to begin the job of reviving the club's on-field fortunes after they finished seventh in the Premier League table last term.

RAFA EXIT BEST FOR EVERYONE - TORRES

Fernando Torres apparently did not want Rafa Benitez to leave Liverpool but admits his fellow Spaniard's departure was "best for everyone".

Benitez was the man who brought Torres to Merseyside for a £20million fee in the summer of 2007.

And the former Atletico Madrid striker was a central figure as the Reds pushed Manchester United all the way in the Premier League title race in 2008-9.

But last season was a major letdown for the Anfield giants, and it ended with Benitez departing to take over newly-crowned European champions Inter Milan.

Torres, whose future has also been the subject of much speculation this summer, is quoted in the Liverpool Echo as saying: "At this time I believe it was best for everyone. He won everything and last year they demanded too much from him."

Roy Hodgson has accepted the opportunity to become the next manager of Liverpool

Hodgson has agreed terms with Liverpool managing director Christian Purslow but no official announcement will be made until Fulham and Liverpool finalise a compensation payment.

Hodgson is due to talk to senior members of the Liverpool coaching staff to help him come to a decision as to who should be his assistant.
