The Reds looked set to open their campaign with a win when goalkeeper Pepe Reina let the ball fall from his grip and into the net during injury time of a pulsating clash at Anfield.

With most clubs, that might be considered a deflating blow, but after a positive summer following the appointment of Roy Hodgson as manager, Gerrard says it will take a lot more to damage spirits at the club.

"My family are Liverpool fans, we are surrounded by them day in and day out," said Gerrard at Monday's post-match press conference.

The long-time captain also helped lift the club's mood after last season's disappointment by pledging his future to Liverpool.

Steven Gerrard is smiling again after a summer of soul searching that took him to the brink of quitting Liverpool.

The Anfield captain led England from the front on Wednesday, the two goals he scored to beat Hungary at Wembley enabling him to exorcise some of the ghosts of a calamitous World Cup.

He hopes his next step, when Liverpool face Arsenal at Anfield today, will be to show he is fully reconciled with the club he loves.

Rafa Benitez has been replaced as Liverpool manager by Roy Hodgson and Gerrard admitted: “Everyone is going into work with a smile on their face again.

“It’s a new chapter at the club with a new manager.

“Roy is successful and the players are looking forward to working with him, so I’m very excited about the new season.

The Argentine has been linked with Barcelona and Inter in recent weeks and has now made it clear that he does not want to remain on Merseyside.

However, he maintains that he has no issue with the club or its fans, but is rather seeking a new challenge and a change of lifestyle.

"My problem is not to play for Liverpool. I'm very proud to play for Liverpool. It's another thing," he told Sky Sports News.

"I said to him [new Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson] that maybe for my life I prefer to change the country, not to change the club - that is the fact.

"Sometimes you can see all the things that the papers or the press say, but at the end the only thing I can say is thank you to everyone in Liverpool because they supported me all the time, from the beginning until now."
