Steven Gerrard and Thierry Henry are among those included in the Champions League All-Time XI.
The competition is launching its Team of the Year 2016 voting on Monday and are grabbing attention ahead of that by announcing their All-Time XI – and what a team it is.
It’s Spain heavy, with nine of the 11 players included having played with Barcelona or Real Madrid in their career.
Barca greats Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi make it into the team, while Thierry Henry is also included.
Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo are the Real Madrid contingent.
And just two other players who haven’t played in Spain – Philipp Lahm and Steven Gerrard – complete the team:
It’s hard to disagree with the selections, especially when you consider either Barca or Madrid have won five of the last seven Champions League competitions.
Lahm gets in for his consistent success while a full-back for Bayern Munich and Gerrard’s inclusion must be a reward for leading Liverpool to a famous victory over AC Milan in Instanbul in 2005.
